Grove Menzieshill Invitational Indoor Hockey Tournament
DISC – 29 & 30 December 2010
Two good days of competitive and sporting indoor hockey was played at DISC giving all teams involved four games during the course of the event.
On the mens side Grove Menzieshill progressed to the final unbeaten, having secured victories against American Eagles, Team USA and Scotland U21. The American Eagles also qualified for the final as a result of a victory against Scotland U21 and a pulsating draw against Team USA, which could have gone either way.
In the third place play-off Scotland U21 ensured that Team USA remained winless by taking a 4-3 victory with three goals for former Kelburne indoor player, who has joined Grove Menzieshill this season, Josh Cairns.
The final, which could have been won by either team, ended 4-4 after normal time with all four American Eagles goals scored by former Grove Menzieshill player Pat Harris. Our goals were scored by Chris Wilson, Gavin Tomlinson and Kenny Stibbles. A five minute period of extra time remained goalless due to some fine saves from keepers at both ends. The resultant penalty shoot-out saw Chris Wilson notch for us while Gavin Tomlinson had his low effort saved and Kerr Thomson hit the bar. The American Eagles scored both of their first two attempts which meant that they ended as winners of the mens event.
In the ladies tournament Milne Craig Clydesdale Western secured three wins to progress to the final to play Grove Menzieshill who managed two wins, against Dundee Wanderers and Scotland U21, from their three matches.
In the third place play-off Vicki Bunce from Dundee Wanderers took control of the match and scored the majority of her teams goals in a 9-4 win against a Scotland U21 team who must have gained a massive amount of experience from playing the top three Scottish ladies sides.
In the final strong defensive play from Grove Menzieshill prevented Milne Craig Clydesdale Western from creating many clear-cut chances. Three goals in normal time from Ali Bell (2) and Kerry Hall was enough to ensure that Grove Menzieshill ladies ran out event winners – many congratulations to them.
The event ran smoothly given the adverse weather conditions giving the travelling US players difficulty in leaving America. Thanks to the many helpers including umpires, technical assistants, caterers and drivers. The club is also appreciative of the support provided by Scottish Hockey to allow the tournament to take place and the US team for incorporating this event in their preparations for the 3rd World Cup which will be held in Poznan in February 2011.
